100% Natural Organic Homemade Whipped Body Butter

Let me start this post by saying that you will see some changes coming to Lean, Clean, Girlie Machine.  Although for years I have been very aware of what I put into my body from a macronutrient standpoint, I had really just been scratching the surface of healthy living. The past year and a half has been a very transitional period in my life. I did not have a healthy mindset in how I lived my life. I was not actually living at all. I won’t get into all the details, but things really took a turn when I was prescribed a birth control pill that absolutely ruined me. I realised that I need to pay attention and take a serious look at what I’m putting into my body and how I take care of my heart and soul.  I’m looking at chemicals and pharmaceuticals in a whole new light, and treating my mind as well as I have treated my physical body.  As I’ve been making this transition,  one thing that I got to thinking about was the chemicals I use topically every day.  Makeup, face wash,  lotion,  etc.  Have you ever looked at the ingredients in your bottle of body lotion?  I made this lotion based on a bunch of recipes I found online and mixed together my favorite products.  I am obsessed with the outcome – I cannot get enough of this stuff! I’ll never go back!

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Organic Cocoa Butter
1/2 Cup Organic Raw Shea Butter
1/2 Cup Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil
1/2 Cup 100% Almond Oil
*Optional 1tsp 100% Argan Oil (this stuff is amazing, I use it as my facial moisturizer morning and night and also in my hair)

Directions:

You will need a stand / hand mixer for this!

In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the cocoa butter, shea butter, and coconut oil.  Transfer to your mixer bowl and stir in almond oil and Argan oil if using. This is where you could add an essential oil for fragrance if you wish,  but honestly the cocoa butter makes it smell like PURE chocolate, and I’m not gonna change that!

Refrigerate for about 2 hours. You don’t want it completely solidified, but it should be firming up before you whip it. Once it’s about 50% solid, get whipping.  I used my kitchenaid stand mixer with the whipping attachment. Whip until it reaches a thick, buttery consistency. Transfer to a jar or tupperware and you’re good to go! No need to refrigerate, it will keep it’s butter consistency at room temperature.

This does turn to an oil once you start to rub it into your skin, but personally I love that. It gives your skin an amazing glow and makes it feel so squidgy and hydrated. If you don’t want to wait for your skin to totally soak it up, just pat yourself down with a towel to remove any excess oil.

Enjoy! And let me know if you try any scents. I’m thinking orange could be a good one… chocolate orange..  mmmmm.

Juice Recipe for a Cold

Cold Remedy Juice:

cold remedy juice

2 Handfuls Kale (Full of Vitamins A, C, B6, Copper, Iron, Magnesium – all essential for immune health)
2 Handfuls Spinach (Almost as good as Kale!)
2 Carrots (Source of beta carotene which converts into Vitamin A – helps the body fight off infections)
1 TBSP Lemon Juice (Antibacterial, antiviral, immune boosting powers, also cleanses & fights infection)
1 Inch Ginger (All around super food which I add to everything, great anti inflammatory)
1/2 Apple (An apple a day keeps the doctor away …. but I just add this for sweetness!)

Stop A Cold In Its Tracks – Naturally

I’ll start this by saying “I never get sick.” Seriously. I don’t.  I used to get what I would call my annual cold, it would take 7-10 days to do it’s thing and then I’d be back to normal.  In more recent years though I have managed to fight off a cold from the get go – and not by masking the effects with dayquil.

I woke up yesterday morning with that dreaded feeling in my throat.  I thought … maybe I’m just all dried out from sleeping with the heating on and my mouth wide open (droooooool).  But no – it’s the beginnings of a cold.  Well luckily I was starting my day with a hot yoga class.  That was the plan to begin with, but if it wasn’t I would have made it the plan or at least sought out steam immediately.

At the first signs of a cold here are my suggestions for stopping it in it’s tracks or at least toning it down.  Like I said first – seek out steam.  If you are deathly sick don’t go to a class, that’s just rude.  You could take a long hot shower, take a hot bath, or just hold your face over a steamy bowl of water with a towel covering your head.  But get to sweating.

As far as working out goes – you just have to see how you feel.  For me the general rule is that if it’s above the neck you’re ok to work out, below the neck (as in the cold has moved to your chest) – don’t.  You also want to be respectful of other people around you to not get them sick.  The gym is a breeding pool for germs anyway, but make sure to be cautious.  Don’t go around sneezing and coughing over everything and everyone.  Actually, if you’re sneezing and coughing maybe just stay home!

Happy Cold & Flu Season!

My Thoughts on The Biggest Loser Finale (Season 15)

I’ll start by saying that I love The Biggest Loser and everything it stands for. I’ve watched for years and it never gets old. Watching people get their life back, their bodies back, educate themselves, educate their families – it really is a wonderful thing.

I want you to know that I am not judging Rachel … my heart actually hurts for her when I read all of the reactions online. I had a feeling she was going to win because I thought she had a very competitive nature, but what I saw when she walked on stage at the finale didn’t look like a competitor, it looked like someone very desperate. All of my excitement turned to concern, and I knew I wasn’t the only one thinking it. The look on Bob and Jillian’s faces said it all (not to mention Tanya in the background). All I could think was if this looks this bad on TV (which adds 10lbs) I can only imagine it in person.

I do feel like the 3 finalists all came in quite thin. One thing I have always thought about The Biggest Loser is that there shouldn’t be such a huge monetary prize. I mean, you get to live on a ranch, have healthy foods provided for you, and get your ass kicked by 3 amazing trainers day in and day out. Is that not prize enough? The prize should be getting your life back, and unfortunately it looks to me like people are now more concerned about winning that $250,000 than their health.

When Rachel was about to leave the ranch the doctor told her she was SO close to being in the “athlete” range for body fat percentage. If that isn’t a big enough prize, and something to be beyond proud of, then I don’t know what is. I think she took it too far not only for the money, but because there is a deeper issue. I’m not here to judge what it is, and I hope that she gets her life back COMPLETELY and that The Biggest Loser will re-think their reward system for this show in the future.

Gym Bag Essentials

IMG_20140126_191654

Have you heard the phrase “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”? Well I think it’s totally accurate. I’m the type of person who can let one or two little things going awry mess up my whole routine. Therefore, I plan plan plan.

There’s nothing worse than getting yourself pumped up for the gym and when you arrive you’ve forgotten something you need. Regardless of when you plan your workouts, if you’ve got all of your essentials you’ll be ready for anything that pops up! Here are my essentials :
gymbagblog

1. EOS Lip Balm : Lip gloss is not poppin for the gym.  Keep your lips luscious with your favorite balm instead.

2. LUSH “No Drought” Dry Shampoo : If you need to be back at work or somewhere else after your workout, this dry shampoo is amazing.  Dust on at your roots and brush through.  It will soak up excess oils and your hair won’t smell like you’ve just been at the gym.

3. Sud Pacifique Vanille Coco Body Spray : This is one of my favorite scents. It’s not strong like a perfume so it is perfectly acceptable wear at the gym. (Gym Etiquette 101: Don’t choke people with your perfume)

4. SONY Headphones :  I love these headphones because they sound great, and they’re cheap. I probably lose them and have to buy new ones 3 – 4 times a year.  Not about to be doing that with a pair of Beats!

5. Harbinger Gloves : Number one reason – to keep my hands lady like.  Now I know some of you like to be tough and not wear gloves, but let me tell you – you’re not tougher than a staph infection or warts.  And those my friends, are what you can catch at the gym. #lovetheglove

6. Venus Disposable Razors : Lookin cute in your tank top … aaaand you forgot to shave your pits.  Always have these handy.  Although – I won’t have that problem anymore, yaaaay laser!

7. Extra Extra Hair Ties and Bobby Pins : duh.

8. Secret Aerosol Deodorant : I love aerosol deodorant before / after the gym.  It doesn’t leave marks on your clothes, and I like to spray a little in my shoes too! …. on that note, I do not have stinky feet .. and maybe this is why?

9. Dermalogica Travel Kit :  Whatever skincare you use, get a travel kit!  Makeup and sweat is a bad combination.  I don’t go makeup free to the gym, but I always wash my face and follow my usual skin care routine immediately after.

10.  Makeup Wipes :  If I come to the gym with a full face of makeup on, I use wipes to get rid of the majority of it.  You can wipe off the dramatic stuff, while not going totally bare 🙂

11. Starbucks VIA Packets :  Need a pick me up?  Have these available for when you’re needing some extra pep in your step.

12. Polar USA Heart Rate Monitor :  I use my HRM as a tool during my workout.  I assess my rest periods based on my heart rate and make sure I don’t dip below my target heart rate zone.

13. Water Bottle / Protein Shaker : Always handy to have.  Stop wasting money buying water at the gym (not to mention wasting all those plastic bottles!)  Also good if you’re on the go and need to shake up a protein shake when you’re done.

14. Measuring Tape :  The best way to track improvement is to take measurements.  Gym scales are never to be trusted, so if you’re feeling a little curious take some quick measurements.  If you weigh yourself on an inconsistent scale (such as a gym scale), you’re setting yourself up for failure.  If you weigh less than you thought you might not try as hard or treat yourself, if you weigh more it can be really upsetting and ruin your day.  Stick to the measuring tape.

Get your bag packed on a Sunday and you’ll be ready to tackle the week!
